Take 5 with Freya McGhee – Chair of CoreNet Global Young Leaders
4th March 2025
Freya McGhee, Business Development Manager at BW, takes five to share insights into her role as Chair of CoreNet Global Young Leaders in celebration of Women in Construction Week.
1. As Chair of CoreNet Global Young Leaders UK, what’s your main focus, and what impact do you hope to make?
My focus is on helping young professionals in corporate real estate build the right connections, gain valuable insights from industry leaders, and, most importantly, actually enjoy networking! I want to create opportunities for meaningful conversations that not only propel careers forward but also spark fresh ideas and inspiration.
2. Corporate real estate is evolving fast. What are the biggest trends shaping the future of workplaces, and how can young professionals stay ahead of the curve?
AI and data-driven decision-making are now major players in workplace strategy. To stay ahead, young professionals should start honing their AI skills – get comfortable with tools like ChatGPT first, then explore more advanced platforms tailored to their role. Embracing tech early will give you a competitive edge in shaping the workplaces of the future.
3. One of CoreNet’s key principles is connection. How has being part of the Young Leader network helped you grow professionally?
CoreNet has given me industry insights and networking opportunities that wouldn’t have been available to me otherwise. It’s been invaluable in expanding my knowledge and connecting me with the right people at the right time.
4. Women in construction and real estate are still underrepresented at senior levels. What needs to change to make sure more women don’t just join the industry but own their space in leadership?
First, we need to normalise flexible career paths that accommodate different life stages and challenge outdated biases about what leadership ‘looks like.’ Women also need to be supported with access to high-profile projects and leadership training. Most importantly, representation matters – seeing more women in senior roles creates a ripple effect, encouraging others to follow suit.
5. If you could go back and give one piece of advice to yourself at the start of your career, what would it be?
Find your voice and own it. Being authentic and true helps you stand out and build genuine connections!
