Blending Japanese design and modern tech to transform Canonical’s briefing centre

The Project

BW delivered a high-end 11,100 sq ft Cat B fit-out for Canonical’s London briefing centre. Designed to serve as a reception, presentation hub, broadcast centre, offices, meeting rooms, and focus pods, the space seamlessly combines Japanese craftsmanship with modern innovation, reflecting Canonical’s global ethos.

The Solution

The project required solving intricate challenges to maintain design integrity while adhering to strict safety and regulatory standards. These included:

  • Fire Regulation Compliant Kumiko Panels: Crafted with flawless precision to comply with both UK and Japanese fire regulations.
  • Seamless Systems Integration: Mechanical, electrical, AV, and sprinkler systems were expertly concealed within the minimalist design without compromising aesthetics.
  • Collaborative Approach: Frequent design workshops and meetings to refine every detail, aligning with the client’s working style.
  • Global Coordination: Multiple visits to Japan and bespoke joinery contractors ensured top-quality craftsmanship, supported by rigorous sampling processes.
  • Flawless Execution: BW’s meticulous attention to detail delivered a Defect Free project, achieving perfection through complex details and zero fitting tolerances.

The Design

The centre’s design beautifully blends Japanese aesthetics, bespoke craftsmanship, and modern technology:

  • Handmade Kumiko Panels: Crafted from Hinoki wood sourced in Japan by the BW team, these panels showcase authentic Japanese artistry.
  • Bespoke Joinery: Including standout elements like a sleek white surfboard table wrapping around an etched Corian-clad column.
  • Natural Light & Wellbeing: Expansive windows fill the space with light, fostering a calm and healthy atmosphere.
  • Artisan Details: From stretch fabric ceilings and British-made ironmongery to globally sourced art and textiles, every detail celebrates authenticity and innovation.
